Former Sports, Arts and Culture Minister, Zizi Kodwa has resigned as a member of Parliament (MP) of the African National Congress (ANC). This follows criticism over Kodwa’s deployment to the National Assembly.
According to the statement, Secretary-General of the ANC, Comrade Fikile Mbalula, has received a letter from Comrade Zizi Kodwa formally communicating his resignation as a Member of Parliament. The letter is dated 24 July 2024 and the resignation is with immediate effect.
“The African National Congress has accepted the letter, and wishes comrade Zizi well,” the party’s statement reads.
Kodwa’s return to Parliament sparked anger among the public even from the ANC’s alliance partner, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu). Only a few weeks after being accused of corruption, on June 25, the former Cabinet minister took the oath of office as an ANC member at the Good Hope Chamber in Cape Town. Were he to quit as the Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture right away.
Speaking to the NewzroomAfrika Veterans League leader Snuki Zikala says they are investigating how and who gave the instruction that beleguared Zizi Kodwa must be sworn in as Member of Parliament. He says those fingered in state capture must step aside to protect the dignity of the party.
Today, Thursday 25 July 2024 former minister appeared at the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court. Kodwa and his co-accused have been charged with contravention of the prevention and combating of corrup activities ACT, as well as contravention of the prevention of organised crime Act.
